During the months of July and August, 2011, the USPS has approved a 3% discount to mailers who use a QR barcode (Quick Response Barcode) on approved mailing pieces. The apparent goal is to encourage companies to design their marketing strategies around a conglomeration of both online and offline media.

A QR code is a 2 dimensional barcode that is readable by most, modern smartphones. Many companies utilize QR codes to prompt customers to take immediate action; such as to visit a website, make a purchase, download a coupon, or to register for an upcoming event. Advertisers could benefit greatly by using this technology in their bulk mailing campaigns.

Most mailers can take advantage of this promotion, even if the marketing material is already printed. QR codes can be printed with the inkjet addressing system as the mailing pieces are being addressed. Some of the better inkjets are already equipped with the ability to print QR codes. Buskro inkjets, for instance, have many different kinds of barcodes, including QR codes, programmed into the software. Other options are available for mailers who do not yet have the ability to print QR barcodes.
